Foreign Language Teaching and Learning In Eastern Indonesian Islamic Higher Education

Abstract


This study will describe how English for medical academic purposes based on the needs analysis of Health Science Students in eastern Indonesian State Islamic Higher Education. The current English materials used in all departments under the Health Sciences Faculty of UIN Alauddin Makassar have not accommodated all those skills. Therefore, it is a need to design a model of language teaching and learning in the department. The method employed survey with 56 informants of the fifth semester students of Health Sciences academic year 2012/2013 as a sample to fill out a written opened questionnaire. The result showed that the sort of EMAP course materials consisted of ten components and eighteen topics, the students’ needs and expectations were reading and listening (receptive skills) and speaking and writing (productive skills) while the current English materials have not accommodated all the four skills. To identify the learning model, the design of EMAP course materials should support the students to be able to learn alone, in pairs, a small group, a big group, and with all their classmates.
