Abstract
Although it started in earlier periods in other countries, landscape architecture as a vocational education in Turkey was grounded on the initiatives at Higher Agricultural Institute in 1933. The educational programme was conducted at Decoration Plant Department back then. Since 1989, graduates have right to own ‘Landscape Architecture’ title. As of 2013, there are 23 universities that have Landscape Architecture Department and 17 of them accept students. There are various inconsistencies among the graduates due to the increasing number of universities and Landscape Architecture Departments in Turkey, and different name of faculties that these departments belong to. Different approaches to the profession and the insufficiency of the education vis-à-vis the expectations coming from the sector can be seen as the main inconsistencies.
The main goal of this study is to create a view about ‘Quality of Education in Landscape Architecture’ which is being discussed in Turkey in recent years and to consider the issue by taking into account not only the academic aspects but the sectoral expectations too. Within this framework, the study evaluates the graduation projects of the students where they can reveal what they had learnt during their overall study at the university. In this analysis, the views of academics and prominent landscape architects are compared. By this means, a detailed questionnaire was designed. Ten different graduation projects, design concept, planting design and presentation techniques were compared.
As a result, academics and practitioners’ expectations concerning landscape architecture education in Turkey were specified, and some solutions for problems were highlighted.
