Abstract

In basic design education, students learn to express themselves, to convert a form using the materials given, to form organizations and to gain designing skills revealing their creativeness. The theoretical lecturing is performed with practical activities and different techniques in order to make students gain designing skills. One of these techniques is the collage technique. This technique in which forms and objects unrelated with each other are brought together to create a whole collage provides too much freedom to the designer. This freedom makes the transferring of the power of imagination to the end-product easier.

In this study, two different practices are performed where collage technique, the line and texture elements which help the students at the beginning of design education are dealt with. The practices are carried out with students of 1st class of Landscape Architecture Departmant of Trakya University Faculty of Architecture.

1st Practice: After the theoretical lecturing of the ‘line’ element;

The works that remind calligraphic exercises formed with black lines on colorful background of Hans HARTUNG, who is one of the prominent figures of abstract art, have been examined. The students were asked to find natural or artificial objects that might be examples for the ‘line’ element. They were asked to combine these objects with collage technique and fictionalize the influence of the abstract art of the artist as a composition.

2nd Practice: After the theoretical lecturing of the ‘texture’ element;

The design of Roof Garden of Safra Bank by modernist landscape architect Roberto Burle MARX in Sao Paulo has been examined. The students were asked to find natural or artificial objects that might be examples for the ‘texture’ element. They were asked to combine these objects with collage technique and to abstract the design of the designer in warm and cool colors.

Consequently, when the opportunity of giving an output point to the students during the design process is merged with the opportunity of material diversity, the revealing of the feelings and ideas is made easy.
