Abstract

Introduction: Music was well taught for centuries and will be well taught for centuries. But not all music performers become music educators. Will the application of the medical education principle “FAIR” model (Feedback, Activity, Individualization and Relevance) be applied to education in piano pedagogy and education in general? Education is to inculcate values (from the heart), promote creativity (from the head, heart to hand) and to apply knowledge in a meaning way (all 3 “H”) for all people, either in the developing countries or in the developed countries, both in sciences and in arts. Professor Harden reported the principle in Medical Education using the FAIR model. Can this model be used for piano education?

Purpose of the Study: The case study is to apply the FAIR model for the students doing piano pedagogy at the University of Michigan and compare that to medical education of students from the University of Singapore.

Method: Using the FAIR model in classes for sight reading, to master arpeggios, dynamics, chords, triads and tempo in piano playing, to say out loud as playing and to have fun.

Formative Assessment: Mini quiz to test intervals, random notes, etc.
