Abstract

Games and games-based learning have been a part of education for decades. However, with new technological advances, digital games have recently emerged as a new teaching tool. In Basic Typography lesson we discuss basic design principles and then apply them to real-world projects. Recently we did a unit on typography, and I was thrilled to find a wealth of online games that focus on typography concepts. This selection of online and mobile font games will help test and expand both students knowledge and identification skills. In Basic typography lesson students played games. I did manage to playfully throw in some font terms there. But it was all done to point out that playing around with typography can be fun. Web applications on fonts and typography is interesting for students. In this study 20 students played  Kern Type, an online typography game created by interactive designer Mark MacKay for Method of Action, is geared toward both testing and helping us to understand the fundamentals of letter-spacing. Mission is to achieve pleasant and readable text by distributing the space between letters. Players solution will be compared to a typographer's solution, and we will be given a score depending on how close we nailed it.
