Last modified: 2014-03-29
Abstract
Throughout history, humankind has expressed his feelings and thoughts by lines, colors, sounds, forms and volume, thus reaching at the concept of art. Birds have inhabited the world for much longer than human beings. Man has always considered birds distinctively, mainly due to their amazing ability to fly. The special meaning of birds to man have been reflected in many scientific and artiscstic works which evolve around these creatures, in different times, by different societies and in different domains. It is no coincidence that birds are commonly encountered as a mythological figure, as a symbol of peace and freedom, as a representative of power and wisdom, or as an inspiration of art. Birds have found their way into practically all forms of art, such as plastic arts, drama, architecture, music, literature and cinema just to name a few. In various art forms and periods, they may appear as the dominant subject or sometimes as a plastic element, an abstraction, a momentary vision or a stylized form. In other words, the bird image has always existed, yet it has constantly been renewed and has changed its form. Birds have always been a part of human life and therefore, it may be foreseen that the bird figure is and always will be an irreplaceable element in contemporary and future artistic works.
