Abstract

The initial influence of Islam on art was not profound, however its impact became conspicuous in the ways that artists began to create art within the rules of Islam.

From the earliest beginnings of Islam, there have been rules and obligations regarding the depiction of human body particularly female figures in illustration and painting in general. In Islamic countries’ art, after the coming of Islam, the interest of artists in religion can obviously be seen, by using Quran and its verses in their works in different innovations. It has been used for centuries in the field of book design including exquisite illuminated texts with geometric designs between or around the verses of Quran. In this particular case, Islamic restrictions led Islamic artists to create beautiful styles of book design without using figurative representation particularly female figures.

However, this article will argue whether these restrictions help artist to be more creative or make creativity incredibly difficult for artists by putting up various restrictions therefore killing their inspiration.

Key Worlds: Islamic Art, figurative representation, female figure, contemporary art.
