Effect of using fuel-oil on regulating water advance and recession times in a conventionally irrigated furrow system

Abstract


This experiment was conducted on Typic Torrifluvent soil of silty clay loam texture. Furrow irrigation system was used to compare surge (S) and conventional continuous (CC) flow types on the basis of advance and recession times as parameters of evaluation. Fuel oil was spread on the bottom of each furrow by 1% of the dry mass of the upper 5cm of the surface layer. The time of water application was 2 hours for the control treatment (continuous flow) while two cycle times were used for the surge flow, 60 min (2 surges) and 30min (4 surges). Water was applied in two discharge rates 0.4 and 0.6 liter/sec. The results showed that using surge irrigation resulted in fast movement of water front towards the end of furrow due to consolidation and sealing of the soil surface which caused a decrease in advance and recession times of soil surface which caused a decrease in advance and recession times in comparison with continuous flow irrigation. Negative results were obtained when fuel oil was used by having higher values of advance and recession times in comparison with untreated furrows. This happened due to the improvement of soil structure and infiltration characteristics. Higher discharge rates (0.6liter/sec) resulted in lower advance and recession times in comparison with lower rates (0.4 liter/sec).
