Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) is one of the student centered approaches and has been considered by a number of higher educational institutions in many parts of the world as a method of delivery. This paper presents an approach of teaching using PBL in Mechanics of Structure within engineering classroom in  Malaysian Polytechnics. In the learning process, students learn how to analyze the problem given among the students and sharing classroom knowledge into practice in order to enhance the generic skills of student.  Further, through this course’s emphasis on problem-based learning, students acquire generic skills as they tackle complex, interdisciplinary and real-situation problems. Through this approach, students acquire communication skills and teamworking skill in generating the ideas. The role of learning approach used to enhance the capability of communication skills and teamworking skill among students. This study was used to measure the influence of the communication skills and teamworking skill towards the students’ academic achievement.  The results of this study show that the effects of this learning approach upon the capability of students’ generic skills and student learning approach were significant.
