Abstract

The educator should consider human dignity as an integral and essential part of citizenship education, consisting of general values, rights and entitlements. Therefore he/she should strive to present it in relation to major global problems and current issues. The paper demonstrates different approaches to raise the awareness about human dignity at high schools in Slovenia, encompassing public and private schools. In addition, it illuminates the difference between explicit and implicit teaching on human dignity. The research, based on qualitative methods, focusses on the last years of secondary education that are most significant in the political socialization of young citizens. With a tendency to encourage high school students to resolve social problems as well as exploring and developing human values, the paper provides the conceptual framework of »education on human dignity«. It is the very core of social education and should be set on holistic approach in order to go in line with changing global social system.
