An Analysis of Research Trends in Theses about Computer Assisted English Education in Turkey

Abstract


Scientific studies have increased correspondingly as the questions of using technology in educational environments with the development of computer technologies are increasing. Foreign language learning and computer assisted learning are among the most important topics of our time. The fact that in Turkey to have been taught English predominantly in language teaching and an average student takes more than 1000 hours of English classes in 12 years but students still cannot learn the language at the desired level. This situation indicates how important these studies are. To keep up with the pace of the era, the studies on computer assisted education and language education have become very important and lots of scientific studies have been published. There are many theses among these scientific research studies. The aim of this research is to examine the tendencies of the theses written in the field of computer-assisted English education. In this research it is aimed to determine what points of thesis concentrate, to reveal the present situation from a broad perspective and to shed light on the researcher. The theses investigated in the research were reached using the online thesis library on the web page of The Council of Higher Education of the Republic of Turkey. Accordingly, only the theses approved by the owners to be published on this website could be attained. 29 Dissertations were examined in terms of their contents, forms and methodologies. The data collected based on selected criteria from those theses are analyzed as frequency and percentage. In light of the data obtained theses, results are analyzed and interpreted in terms of their tendency. Findings revealed that, studies on the perceptions and attitudes is more than the study of materials in this field. In theses, the most examined group is middle school and university level students followed by teachers. Teachers mainly consist of English teachers working in primary education and very few studies have been conducted on the academician. As a result of the study, suggestions have been developed for researchers who want to conduct research in this area.
