Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the use of body language in secondary school English teachers' lessons. Within the scope of the research, a single scan model was used. The study group of the research is composed of English teachers who are working in secondary schools attached to the Ministry of National Education in Corum province center in 2016 - 2017 academic year and students who are studying in these schools. A total of 98 teachers, 34 male and 64 female, participated in the research. A total of 1129 middle school students, 642 girls and 487 boys, who were randomly selected from different class levels on a voluntary basis, participated in the research. In this study, the body language scale developed by Tok and Temel (2014) was used as data collection tool. The questionnaire consists of two parts; the first part, where personal information is included, and the second part, which is made up of materials related to the use of body language. Survey form was applied to students and teachers and data were collected. The collected data were processed in the SPSS statistical program and confirmed with the Lisrel program. One way variance analysis was used in the study.

According to the results of the study, the use of body language does not differ significantly according to gender, age and seniority variables in the lessons of English teachers. However, the use of body language by the teachers of the students varies according to the sex and class level of the student. Furthermore, according to the results obtained, it is understood that the teachers evaluate themselves better in terms of body language usage compared to the students. In other words, the students gave lower scores to the teachers compared to the points that the teachers gave to them in terms of body language usage.

Key Words: Body language, language scale, ELT teachers.
