Abstract

In November 2016, UNICEF (2016) released the number of Syrian immigrants migrated to our country due to adverse events taking place in Syria is 2,764,500. Syrian children account for 1.2 million of this population. A total number of Syrian immigrant children correspond to 45% of the total number of Syrian immigrants. Children of school age comprise 860,000 of these children. 490,000 of these children, on the other hand, are currently taking education as registered students in schools (UNICEF, 2016). As it can be seen from these numbers, it is a very high possibility that the teachers meet with a Syrian student in their classes. For this reason, the preschool teacher candidates who will graduate this year will be examined in terms of their attitudes towards working with Syrian children. There will be three main research questions.

  • Do pre-school teacher candidates know the current situation of Syrian children in our country?
  • What are the attitudes of preschool teacher candidates to the presence of Syrian children in their classes?
  • Do preschool teacher candidates feel ready to provide training to a Syrian child?

To answer abovementioned questions cross-sectional survey will be conducted with pre-school teacher candidates in Ankara. Convenient sampling method will be used to decide participants of the study. A survey will be sent to 4th-grade pre-school teacher candidates (N=100) in Ankara. In the survey, there will be both open-ended and close-ended research questions to obtain data about teacher candidates' attitudes towards working with Syrian children. To ensure having valid and reliable instruments and analyses in the study, intercoder agreement method will be used (Fraenkel, Wallen, & Hyun, 2011).
