Educational Strategies to Establish Adequate Oral Health Habits

Abstract


Oral pathologies or problems such as dental caries and periodontal diseases are admittedly the most common oral diseases and are one of the most important causes of tooth loss and oral health problems affecting the quality of life of the individuals. In general, the population has an uneven knowledge level about oral diseases and oral hygiene methods, and it has been known the greater probability of non-treated caries and periodontal diseases in low educated and low income people. In addition, various studies demonstrate that the education level may influence on patients’ knowledge and behavior regarding to the oral diseases, the oral hygiene habits and preventive measures. For this reason, there is the need of oral health education programs and/or projects explaining the oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases, emphasizing preventive measures such as diet, dental floss and tooth brushing. The purpose of this article is to discuss and to review the educational strategies to establish adequate oral health habits.
