Improving students' motivation and performance in learning science through integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Technology) and based on Jember’s local wisdom

Abstract


Globalization began to have an impact on all aspects of life include economic, social, political, and not least the educational aspects. Graduates of educational institutions of demands become more complex. Students are required to have a variety of 21st-century skills in order to survive in global competition. Science education in schools began to undergo transformation to prepare graduates to be successful in their careers. One way is to combine the knowledge with the Jember’s local wisdom and  STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Technology) education. The study aims to determine the students' response after being given the science learning that is integrated with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Technology) and the local wisdom. Design research is a qualitative description of the 29 samples from the seventh-grade junior high school in the district of Panti, Jember. The results obtained show that 93.1% students more easily understand the lessons, 100% of students be enthusiasm in learning, as well as 96.55% students are happy with the learning process, then all of the students be encouraged to take advantage of local potentials in their area. Therefore, by integrating science learning with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Technology)  and local knowledge provide the response and interest are excellent for students. student performance is shown from products made by students to harness the potential of their local area. so that student have the ability to be able to apply the knowledge gained in the life of society.
