The Impact of Virtual Reality on Flow, Learning Motivation, and English Learning Effectiveness: A Study of Sixth-Grade Students in Taiwan

Abstract


The increasing use of technology in educational settings is revolutionizing learning, with immersive learning experiences playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of education. However, more research is required to understand the effects of virtual reality (VR) on English language acquisition. This study explores the relationship between flow experience, learning motivation, and English learning outcomes among sixth-grade students in Taiwan within a VR environment.Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 120 sixth-grade students. A VR-based immersive English learning environment was created, and data on flow experience, learning motivation, and English learning outcomes were analyzed. The results showed that students who engaged with VR significantly improved their learning motivation and effectiveness. Furthermore, learning motivation was found to positively impact both flow experience and learning outcomes, with flow experience acting as a mediator between motivation and effectiveness.However, it is noteworthy that while the flow experience had a significant effect on learning effectiveness before the pre-test, this effect diminished after the VR experience. These findings provide valuable insights for both academics and practitioners, offering guidance for integrating VR technology into English language classrooms to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
